EXCLUSIVE: Player decides against joining Mowbray’s side last minute before signing contract

The transfer of Mateusz Musiałowski to Birmingham City, initially reported by Tomasz Ćwiąkała from Canal+ Sport, was really close to completion. Birmingham and Liverpool reached an agreement, which wasn’t particularly challenging considering that Musiałowski’s contract with “The Reds” expires at the end of the season.

For Musiałowski, playing for Birmingham City was supposed to be his first opportunity in senior football. The youth representative of Poland in the youth team and reserves of Liverpool has played a total of 80 official matches, scoring 30 goals and providing 6 assists.

In the current season, he has participated in 11 matches for “The Reds” reserves, scoring 6 goals and providing an assist.

According to Sport.pl, the 20-year-old ‘changed his mind’ after a deal to join the Blues was very close.

On Thursday, the winger and his agent, Cezary Kucharski, visited Birmingham for the completion of transfer formalities.

The Poland U21 international reportedly engaged in discussions with Birmingham City manager Tony Mowbray, their sporting director, and compatriot Krystian Bielik. However, he opted not to sign with the Blues, citing a ‘last-minute change of decision.’

The attacker has been with Liverpool since 2020, featuring in their U18, U19, and U21 teams. Despite his time with the club, Jürgen Klopp did not provide him with opportunities in the first team.

According to Sport.pl, Musiałowski is reportedly considering leaving England and potentially returning to Poland. The transfer window in his home country closes next month, giving him and his agent time to secure a new signing there.
