“Now the season is finished, I need to sit with the club and to try to clarify things that unfortunately this year I didn’t like.” – Enzo Maresca plans talks with Leicester City hierarchy over two matters he ‘didn’t like’

Enzo Maresca is eager to engage in discussions with Leicester City’s leadership regarding financial matters and transfer strategies as he seeks to address concerns he has identified before the club’s return to the Premier League.

Despite steering clear of some challenging topics during the season to maintain focus on promotion, Maresca now aims to address these issues head-on with the club’s directors.

With promotion secured and the Championship title clinched, he recognizes the importance of tackling these complex issues. Facing a breach of Profit and Sustainability regulations for the upcoming season, the club may start with a points deduction, necessitating player sales in June to avoid further financial difficulties.

Concerns that they would go beyond the EFL threshold stopped City from completing a transfer for Inter Milan midfielder Stefano Sensi in January. The Italian arrived at Seagrave on deadline day, but time ran out as City and Inter debated the minute details of the deal.

With loanee Cesare Casadei recalled by Chelsea in that month, Maresca found himself short of one midfielder for the latter part of the season, leading him to express frustration several times over the failure to secure Sensi’s signing.

Additionally, he disclosed at the beginning of January that he had only become aware of the club’s financial challenges as the transfer window opened.

These incidents have prompted Maresca to seek clarification and adjustments to the behind-the-scenes processes at City. When asked after the 3-0 victory over Preston if he was starting to feel excited for the Premier League season, Maresca replied, “No, to be honest. Right now, it’s about enjoying a bit, finishing strong, and then we’ll sit down with the club.”

“I’ve told you already this season that, in January, when we had the problems with Casadei and Sensi, that was not the moment to talk about that. I told you when we had the financial problems that it was not the moment to talk about that because we needed to be focused on our target.

“Now the season is finished, I need to sit with the club and to try to clarify things that unfortunately this year I didn’t like.”

Sounding frustrated, he added: “No, I’m not frustrated. I’m the most happy man in the world in this moment. But because I’m in charge of this club in terms of being the manager, I need things to work well. For me, there are things we need to clarify and we need to modify. Now is the moment to enjoy, but things happened this season that I didn’t like.”

Maresca isn’t the sole individual who must confer with the club before the summer commences. City faces the prospect of six players whose contracts expire at the end of June. While Jamie Vardy appears likely to remain, uncertainties surround the futures of Jannik Vestergaard, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Dennis Praet, and Marc Albrighton.
